Improper storage is the second leading cause of hydraulic breaker failure after blank firing. Follow these steps to protect your SOOSAN breaker during off-season storage or cold-weather operation.

A hydraulic breaker sitting idle for weeks or months can suffer more damage than one working every day — if it's stored incorrectly. Seal degradation, internal corrosion, nitrogen pressure loss, and chisel seizure are all preventable with the right storage procedure.
This guide covers proper short-term storage (1–4 weeks), long-term storage (1 month or more), and cold-weather operation for SOOSAN SB and SQ Series breakers.
Why Storage Matters
When a hydraulic breaker is disconnected from the excavator and left idle:
- Nitrogen gas pressure in the accumulator slowly dissipates if the charging valve leaks
- Hydraulic oil drains away from internal surfaces, leaving metal-to-metal contact exposed to moisture
- Seals and O-rings dry out and crack without the lubricating effect of oil circulation
- The chisel can seize in the lower bushing if left in the same position for extended periods
- External surfaces corrode if not protected, especially in humid or coastal environments
None of these failures are covered under warranty if caused by improper storage. Prevention takes less than 30 minutes.
Short-Term Storage (1 Day to 4 Weeks)
For breakers stored between jobs or over weekends:
1. Clean the Breaker Thoroughly
Before storage, wash down the entire breaker with a pressure washer or clean water. Remove all mud, concrete residue, and rock dust — especially around the chisel bushing area and hydraulic port connections.
Concrete residue hardens over time and can lock the chisel in place or damage the lower bushing seal.
2. Grease the Chisel
Apply fresh grease to the chisel shank through the grease fitting (Zerk fitting) until grease is visible around the lower bushing. This prevents the chisel from seizing and protects the bushing from moisture.
Use SOOSAN-recommended grease or a high-pressure, water-resistant lithium complex grease (NLGI Grade 2).
3. Cap the Hydraulic Ports
Install the protective caps on both hydraulic inlet and outlet ports. This prevents dust, water, and debris from entering the hydraulic circuit during storage. Never leave ports uncapped — even overnight.
4. Store Vertically (Chisel Down)
Store the breaker in an upright position with the chisel pointing downward. This keeps hydraulic oil pooled around the lower seals and prevents the piston from sitting dry.
If vertical storage is not possible, lay the breaker on its side — never store it with the chisel pointing upward, as this allows oil to drain away from the lower working components.
5. Cover and Protect
Cover the breaker with a tarpaulin or breaker cover to protect it from rain, UV exposure, and debris. Store in a sheltered location if possible.
Long-Term Storage (1 Month or More)
For seasonal storage or extended project gaps, additional steps are required:
1. Complete the Short-Term Steps Above
All short-term storage steps apply. Do not skip them.
2. Check and Recharge Nitrogen Pressure
The accumulator nitrogen pressure should be checked before long-term storage. Use a nitrogen charging kit (never use compressed air or oxygen — only pure nitrogen).
Typical nitrogen pressure by model class:

3. Inject Preservation Oil into Hydraulic Ports
Before capping the hydraulic ports, inject a small amount (50–100 ml) of clean hydraulic oil or preservation oil into each port. This coats the internal hydraulic passages and prevents corrosion during extended storage.
4. Apply Anti-Rust Coating to Exposed Metal
Apply a light coat of anti-rust spray or grease to all unpainted metal surfaces — the chisel, lower bushing area, tie rod threads, and any areas where paint has chipped. Pay special attention to the chisel-to-bushing interface.
5. Remove the Chisel for Very Long Storage
For storage exceeding 3 months, remove the chisel entirely, clean it, coat it with grease, and store it separately. This eliminates any risk of seizure and allows you to inspect the lower bushing and retaining pins before reinstallation.
6. Log the Storage Date and Nitrogen Pressure
Record the storage date, nitrogen pressure reading, and any maintenance performed. This helps you plan the pre-service inspection when the breaker is returned to work.
Cold-Weather Operation (Below 0°C / 32°F)
Operating a hydraulic breaker in freezing temperatures requires additional precautions:
Use Low-Viscosity Hydraulic Oil
Standard hydraulic oil thickens significantly below 0°C, reducing flow rate and potentially starving the breaker of adequate lubrication. Switch to a low-viscosity cold-weather hydraulic oil (ISO VG 32 or VG 46 with low pour point) when operating below freezing.
Consult your excavator manufacturer's cold-weather hydraulic oil recommendation — the breaker uses the same oil circuit as the excavator.
Warm Up Before Full-Load Operation
In cold weather, run the excavator's hydraulic system at low RPM for 10–15 minutes before operating the breaker. This allows hydraulic oil to warm up and reach proper viscosity before full-load breaking begins.
Never start breaking at full power immediately after a cold start — this is a leading cause of seal failure in cold climates.
Increase Greasing Frequency
Cold temperatures reduce grease flow and coverage. In temperatures below -10°C, grease the chisel every 2 hours of operation instead of the standard 4-hour interval.
Protect the Accumulator
The nitrogen accumulator is sensitive to temperature extremes. In very cold conditions (-20°C or below), allow the breaker to warm up gradually before checking nitrogen pressure — cold nitrogen reads lower than actual operating pressure.
Pre-Service Checklist After Storage
Before returning a stored breaker to work:
- Check nitrogen pressure — recharge if below specification
- Inspect all hydraulic hoses and fittings for cracks or deterioration
- Check chisel for wear, cracks, or deformation — replace if worn beyond 10% of original diameter
- Inspect lower bushing for wear — replace if clearance exceeds specification
- Check all tie rod bolts for proper torque
- Grease chisel thoroughly before first use
- Run at low load for the first 30 minutes to re-circulate oil through all components
